From impish spoofs to stunning performances, from crazy fanfare to Hollywood stars, there is almost nothing that this year's IIFA missed
Irrfan Khan proclaimed that the people of Toronto needed to be given the best audience award considering the enthusiasm with which they have cheered every star.
After screaming and shrieking for the last few days outside the hotel where the stars were put up, on the streets as their motorcades passed and at various venues of the International Indian Film Awards (IIFA), the eager-beaver fans sure need lozenges to soothe their hoarse throats now.
They displayed equal fervour for Shah Rukh Khan, Anil Kapoor, Bipasha Basu as well as Sonu Sood, Jaaved Jaafri and Ashish Chaudhry!
Adding to their crescendo of shouts, SRK (despite his keen injury) even made them get jiggy at the awards ceremony.
The event held on Saturday night at Rogers Centre, Toronto had the fans lap up King Khan, who acted as master of ceremonies, performer and dance instructor.
With several A-list male stars staying away, it was left to him to take the event all the way. He even did a Dabangg act as part of his performance as well as his own version of Rock On and Aati Kya Khandala.
THE WINNERS
As expected, Dabangg and My Name Is Khan bagged most of the awards. Having the names associated with the projects present at the venue helps. SRK won best actor for My Name Is Khan while Karan Johar was the best director. Sonakshi Sinha (best newcomer), Sonu Sood (best villain) Mamta Sharma (best singer), Sajid-Wajid/Lalit Pandit (best music composers) and Arbaaz Khan (best film) were also among those who bagged the honours. Riteish Deshmukh won the best actor in a comic role for Housefull. Asha Bhosle and Sharmila Tagore were honoured with lifetime achievement awards.
OOPS MOMENT...
Lisa Ray announced the name of the Band Baaja Baraat girl Anushka Sharma as Anushka Shankar, mixing up with Pt Ravi Shankar's daughter! She won the best actress honour.
Dia Mirza and Shashi Tharoor declared Priyanka Chopra as winner of the Green Initiative award. The desi girl didn't turn up on the stage leaving Dia to exclaim that she was perhaps putting her makeup on.
PC's performance on a medley of Asha Bhosle's songs was marred by long pauses in between track even though the actress did her bit to salvage the situation by stepping down from the stage to dance with the
audience.
RUFFLE TIME
Boman Irani and Riteish said that John Abraham's next film is called Force as he needs exactly that to bring in audiences to watch his movies! They also did a take-off on Lagaan in black and blue, the way Sanjay Leela Bhansali would direct it. While Deewar was done with SRK and Salman Khan starring in it, which would have Dee War between them end! There was also a spoof on a towel-clad Ranbir Kapoor in Dilwale Dulhaniay Le Jayege, who dumps Kajol as he has Kat, PC and Dippy after him!
H-town IN B-TOWN
Many of hollywoodies were seen at the IIFA ceremony. While Hilary Swank did the honours with Anil Kapoor and Cuba Gooding Jr with Bipasha Basu, Mallika Sherawat was seen with Brian White. The duo co-stars in Politics of Love. We heard that Cuba and Brian are particularly interested in Bollywood outings. Any takers?
