Naga Chaitanya’s new girl

This is probably the first time in film history that a mother-daughter duo will be making their debut together. Not in the same film though. Former model and life coach-cum-therapist, Nandinii Sen is excited. “I have signed three films. The first is a cameo role in Love Express, which is a showcase film for graduates from Subhash Ghai’s film school, Whistling Woods. Then there is Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Mile Doobara where I play Abhay’s mother. I am also acting in Dia-Zahid’s first production, Love, Breakups and Zindagi. In this film, I am acting with one of my oldest friends — Soni Razdan and it has been a wonderful experience. I love acting! Whenever I’m in front of the camera, it feels right. Acting is where I’m meant to be,” she says.

There is reason for double celebration in this close-knit family. Nandinii’s gorgeous daughter, Tara Alisha, is all set to make her Tollywood debut. “I have signed a film opposite Naga Chaitanya and it is called 100 per cent Love. Chaitanya is wonderful to work with and we get along really well,” she adds.

Tara is a Bengaluru girl who studied at Canadian International School, before heading to Chapman University in California to major in production design. But clearly life had other plans. “As part of my degree, I did courses in acting and writing. I dropped out of college two years later and returned to India. That’s when I discovered my true calling. I wanted to be an actor. I signed up with Kwan, a Mumbai-based company that recommended me for the role in the Telugu movie. I met the director Sukumar Sir in Hyderabad and he signed me.”

Though Tara Alisha or Tasha (as she is affectionately called) grew up in Bengaluru, she is not too well-versed in South India languages. “I can understand Telugu although I don’t speak the language. I do have a fondness for languages and I’m sure I will learn the same along the way as I sign more films.”

While Tasha was discovered in a professional manner, her mom Nandinii was coaxed by a friend to take up acting.

That’s when mum and daughter decided to do a joint course in acting at Kreating Characters, where they were trained by Vidul Chaturvedi. “I’m looking forward to working with my daughter. Being a life coach, I bond well with youngsters,” adds Nandinii. “It would be fantastic if mum and I got to act together. We are not just mother and daughter but great friends too and it would be fantastic to be cast together,” says Tasha. While Nandinii is looking forward to challenging character roles; Tasha aspires to make it big in Bollywood. “Acting is therapeutic for me and I absolutely love everything about this profession. I am prepared for the link-ups and gossip. It comes with the territory and one gets used to it,” she adds.

Nandinii is thrilled with the response she has received from friends. “They are happy that I had the courage to enter a new profession at my age. They have been immensely supportive,” she adds. Alisha has already signed her second film but her lips are sealed for now!
